Hi, I'm kayla

I’m not going to lie, choosing your wedding photographer is a big-time decision. There’s a lot to be considered when deciding who gets to photograph your epic day – style and budget come top-of-mind to most, but what else? I asked New England photographer Kearsten Taylor (who has been shooting love stories for 10 years) for her top-3 tips for choosing your photographer and getting your most authentic wedding photos and here’s what she had to say:

Communication

Asking questions, relaying expectations, going over the details, being prepared. I send out a big wedding day questionnaire and still ask a bunch of questions after they send it back. Communication is key to things going smoothly and for photographers to be able to be prepared to catch as much as possible. Maybe this is just my type A and enneagram 1 side talking, but I thrive on organization and preparedness.

Trust

Countless others have mentioned this, but it rings true every time. You need to be able to trust your photographer. If you don’t trust your photographer, then you may have hired the wrong person. When you trust that you’re in good hands, it’s easier to relax and feel less stressed with your final gallery.

Comfort

I know not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera, so taking photos may not always bring comfort. But I believe you should be able to feel comfortable with your photographer as a person. This person is going to be attached to you for some of your greatest milestones and at the very least you should like them as a human being. I love getting reviews back that say things like “They made us feel so comfortable” or “They made the day stress free and gave us confidence.” Having someone you like makes the day ten times better.

When you hire someone that you feel intersects these three things: communication flows well, you trust their vision, experience, artistry, and talent, and when you feel comfortable in their presence, I think you’ve found a wonderful fit.

Communication, Trust and Comfort

It may sound simple, but take it from Kearsten – it’s quite the perfect recipe for authentic photos and a wedding gallery that will be cherished until the end of time. If you need help finding your dream photographer you know where to find our full planning services.
